About Gather & Play

What this site is

Gather & Play is a free, independent library for people who bring others together — for a game night, a dinner, a birthday, or a family gathering where the ages run from eight to eighty. It lives at familygameideas.com.

The library holds eighteen party games with complete rules, four large sets of original prompt cards, printable host kits in US Letter and A4, and practical guides to hosting. It is deliberately small. We would rather explain eighteen games properly than list five hundred badly.

Our tagline is “Good games. Ready when you are.” It describes the two things we care about: that the games are genuinely good, and that you can go from “what shall we play?” to playing in about five minutes.

Who it is for

The site is written for adult hosts. That includes parents, grandparents and anyone organising a mixed-age occasion — “family-friendly” here means a host can use a game with guests of different ages, with adults in the room. It is not a service for children to use on their own, and it has no accounts or profiles for anyone.

We write in American English for an international audience. Printables come in both US Letter and A4, and the prompts avoid references that only make sense in one country.

What you can do here

  • Find a game that fits your group with the game finder — by player count, time, materials and whether you need a seated game.
  • Read the rules in a consistent format: quick rules first, then set-up, full instructions, an example round and two variations.
  • Browse prompts as ordinary web pages. Nothing is hidden behind a button.
  • Plan an evening with My Night, which is stored only in your own browser.
  • Run the game from a phone in a distraction-free host mode, or print what you need.

What we will not do

  • No accounts, no email sign-ups, no app. Nothing on the site requires them.
  • No paywall and no “premium” tier. Every game, prompt and printable is free.
  • No store and no affiliate shopping lists. We do not sell or recommend products.
  • No invented credentials. We do not publish fake authors, fake reviews, star ratings or testimonials.
  • No interruptions in play. Host mode will never carry advertising.

How the site is funded

At present the site carries no advertising. In future, some editorial pages may show clearly labelled advertisements to cover running costs. If that happens, ads will not appear in host mode, on search or saved pages, or beside print and download controls, and no download will ever be gated behind one. Our privacy and cookies pages always state the current position.

How the content is made

Traditional games such as charades and twenty questions belong to everyone, and we say so on each page. Our explanations, example rounds, prompts, diagrams and printables are original to this site.

We use AI-assisted drafting tools as part of the writing process, and every page is then checked against a written editorial checklist for completeness, accuracy of group sizes and materials, tone and safety. We are careful to distinguish that kind of editorial checking from real-world playtesting, which we do not claim unless it has happened. The details are in our editorial policy.

Corrections and suggestions are welcome — a rule that is unclear, a prompt that falls flat, a game you think belongs here. See the contact page.
